Welcome!
The academic endeavors of the faculty, staff and students as well as the courses and the research activities of the Department of Biological Sciences cover a broad spectrum of biology, from molecules and cells to tissues and organisms to populations and ecosystems.  The Department is composed of over 30 faculty, about 50 postdoctoral fellows, over 30 research technicians, over 50 graduate students, about 120 undergraduate majors, and 11 administrative staff.  The Department is housed in the  Biological Sciences Building  and in the adjoining Molecular Biology Stevenson Center and the Learned Lab buildings.  These buildings are integrated with the Medical Research Building III and the Medical Center North building, a manifestation of the overlapping research interests of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Medical School.

The goals of the Department of Biological Sciences are several:
  • To provide students with knowledge of the fundamental concepts of biology and a factual foundation that allows students to be critical and independent thinkers with regard to biological processes and living systems.
  • To provide students exposure to experimental science in order that they may develop into independent researchers.
  • To carry out state of the art, cutting edge research on basic and important biological questions in order to advance understanding of living systems at many levels and to contribute new insights into how living systems function.  Undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students are a significant driving force in these research activities.
